Azzedine Alaïa’s First Major U.S. Retrospective Is Coming to San Francisco

Azzedine Alaïa’s work is getting a major spotlight in San Francisco.

The Legion of Honor will open Azzedine Alaïa: Sculpting Fashion on November 21, marking the designer’s first major U.S. retrospective. The exhibition will feature about 80 garments from across his career, alongside pieces from his historic fashion collection.

Known for body-conscious construction and sculptural silhouettes, Alaïa helped reshape modern fashion through a mix of technical precision, strength, and sensuality. The exhibition will also include looks worn by figures like Tina Turner, Grace Jones, and Rihanna.

The show will place Alaïa’s work in conversation with art from the museum’s permanent collection, emphasizing how closely his fashion practice was connected to sculpture, history, and visual culture.
